My story is about helping friends/neighbors in need. Offering something as simple as a listening ear, a kind word or a smile can be all that is needed to make a difference in a life for the day. The husband of a friend of mine has suffered his second bout of cancer in one year. My girlfriend has needed help with their kids while she has attend doctor visits, cared for him as he recovered from surgery and taken him for treatment. My family has been fortunate enough to spend time with her kids - and we have benefited! Her kids are such a joy (and a good influence!) on my kids. I have also been a sounding board for her fears and concerns; sometimes this is difficult because I am scared for her too. Even though her schedule may not always work with mine for watching the kids or having a conversation- I make time. At different times in my life, I have been in places where the only thing that could help me was someone being my friend; listening, providing words of wisdom (and words not so wise!), making me laugh, helping me see the big picture, encouraging me, guiding me and giving me their time- just that in itself is priceless. Although this is a small, common gesture- to be a friend- I times I am not so good at it. I would like to teach my children that by taking the time for others- even with small gestures- every act does matter to someone.
